The In’s and Out’s of the 2 Piece Jacketed Cover Design & What You Need to Know to Retrofit an Existing Pump

Back in June, we provided you with an update to Waukesha Cherry Burrell’s Universal 1 & Universal 2 pump cover. This change, which standardized the raw casting used for each pumps respective cover, resulted in very similar external appearances. In that post, we also touched on a redesign of the Universal 1 and Universal 2’s jacketed cover. As more and more of these “new” style jacketed covers roll through our shop, we wanted to take today’s post to share some of the intricacies of the new cover design and what end users need to keep in mind as they make the transition.

Two Piece Jacketed Cover for Universal 1 & Universal 2 PD Pumps

First introduced on the Universal 3 series, the two-piece jacketed cover design has now been introduced as the new standard for the U1 and U2.

This modular design makes the Universal series of pumps even more “universal”, allowing for the jacket to simply be bolted on to the existing cover where required. A U2 45 jacket will now also fit a U1 134. How’s that for Universal?

While we at Triplex have not historically stocked jacked pumps, because of this update, we’ll now be stocking jacket modules for pump sizes 006 through 130, which means we quickly ship you a jacketed Universal 1 or Universal 2 model 30 same day!

The In’s and Out’s of the 2 Piece Jacketed Cover Design

With change, however, can come confusion. So let’s take a look at the in’s and out’s of the new jacketed cover design.

First, while there is commonality between the U1 and the U2 jacketed cover design, there is no commonality between the U1/U2 jacket and the U3 jacketed cover.

Second, it’s important to remember that because this is now a two piece jacket design, additional consideration must be taken when removing the cover.

Inside look at the new jacket attachment

With the one piece jacketed cover design, you simply had to isolate the cover to pull it.

With the 2 piece design, if you were to retrofit an existing standard cover with the new jacket design, when you go to pull the cover, the jacket will separate and anything in the cover will come out (assuming it hasn’t been fully drained prior to this).

The “new” bolted assembly with modified standard cover

To address this issue, Waukesha is also offering a modified standard cover that is drilled so that the jacket can be affixed to the cover with screws. Accordingly, Triplex is recommending that if you’re looking to convert an existing pump to a jacketed cover, you purchase a complete assembly, inclusive of a new standard cover. This is different than the part number listed in the manual, so if you’re considering this change, please contact Triplex or your local distributor prior to doing so.

Finally, the o-ring on the U1 and U2 jacket is the standard cover o-ring used on Universal 1 Pump cover. So if you’re using a Universal 2 with jacketed cover, your cover o-ring and jacket o-ring will be different. But if you’re using a Universal 1 with jacketed cover, they will be the same.

So there you have it- everything you need to know about Waukesha’s new 2 piece jacketed cover design. While we know change can be tricky at first, hopefully this post helps explain some of the finer details. And as always, if you have any questions about your Universal 1 or Universal 2 PD pumps, please contact a Triplex Sales Engineer today!
